Acting lessons for Opera Singers

Good acting is so important in Opera.  Sadly often overlooked and yet the good singer/actors advance.  I can teach you how to express yourself in the characater and encourage you to bring your unique qualities out when you sing.  An initial acting lesson contains the basics of acting for 90 minutes and the last 30 minutes we will apply what you learnt to an aria.  All acting is a skill.  It requires time to learn and then develop and explore these skills.

As the greatest British actress of the 19th century Dame Ellen Terry said, “Imagination! Imagination! I put it first years ago, when I was asked what qualities I thought necessary for success upon the stage. And I am still of the same opinion. Imagination, industry [hard work], and intelligence-the three I’s-are all indispensable to the actor, but of these three the greatest is, without any doubt, imagination”.

I offer private lessons in Wandsworth or in other agreed venues.  These lessons are 2 hours and the fee is £75.00

This film was made in Berlin with Bass Roger Krebs.  We worked on Daland’s aria from Der fliegende Holländer and then filmed it.  I felt we needed to focus on the relationships in the aria.   Daland’s relationship with his daughter and the burgeoning relationship betweem the Dutchman and Senta and Daland’s relationship with money.  This clip helped Roger get an agent which led to a Fest contract at the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Landestheater for several years.  Roger is now a company member of the Theater Regensburg and is doing very well.

This is Mezzo-Soprano Hannah Morley who I worked with regularly for about two years.  She continues to develop and is singing beautifully.  I am immensely proud of the superb artist she has become.  (Accompanist is Michael Rose)

“Working in such a supportive environment my confidence has come on leaps and bounds and I now feel I can take all the skills I have learnt to bring roles alive in the future.  It is with Norman’s continuous guidance that I had a choice of colleges this year and am delighted to say I have been offered and accepted a scholarship on the Vocal/Operatic Masters Programme at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.   I very warmly recommend Norman”.
